What to check before your waste contract renews

Renewal dates, notice periods and collection schedules: the details worth looking at before your current waste agreement rolls over.

Pallets of timber and bricks in a builders merchant yard

Waste is an essential cost for every builders merchant, but requirements can vary considerably between branches. The weeks before a contract renews are the easiest time to check whether your current arrangement still fits.

This guide covers the details worth looking at before you sign again, or before an agreement renews without anyone noticing.

Know when your contract ends

Start with the paperwork. Find the end date, the notice period and what happens if nobody gives notice. Some agreements roll over for another term automatically, so the window to review can be shorter than it looks.

  • Contract end date and minimum term
  • Notice period and how notice must be given
  • Any price review or uplift clauses

Look at what you actually collect

A yard, a showroom and a timber shed can produce very different waste. List what each branch actually generates, not what the contract says it should.

  • General and trade waste
  • Recycling such as cardboard, pallets and plastics
  • Skips and containers on site

Check frequencies branch by branch

Collection frequencies often stay the same for years while trading patterns change. A branch that has grown may need more collections; a quieter one may be paying for lifts it no longer needs.

Compare like for like

When you look at alternatives, compare the same service levels: container sizes, frequencies, what is included and what is charged separately. A lower headline price is only useful if the service fits.

Where MSG fits

Rather than spending your valuable time contacting multiple providers, MSG manages the review process for you. We learn about your current arrangements, assess the market and compare the options available. If there is a suitable alternative, we introduce you directly to the provider.

There is no obligation to change supplier. If your existing arrangement remains the right option, you can simply stay where you are.
